Which Sleepers Choose a 96" x 84"
Primary suites in new construction where the bed dimension was set before the walls were framed.
A bed at 96" x 84" is a considered decision instead of a purchase made on a showroom floor. It involves the room, the doorway, the staircase and the linen cupboard, and it rewards planning. What you get in exchange is a bed that fits the people sleeping in it, which, remarkably, most beds do not.
Size, Surface and Comparison
At 96" x 84" this bed presents 56 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 33 per cent more area, 20 inches wider and 4 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| Grand Vermont (this size) | 96" × 84" | 56 sq ft | +33% |
Set against the King at 76" x 80", the closest thing the mass market offers, the difference is not marginal. It is the difference between a bed that almost works and one that does, and no production line makes anything in between.
The Floor Plan Comes First
A bed at this scale is a room-planning decision before it is a purchase. The working minimum for a 96" x 84" is 13' x 10', around 130 square feet, allowing 30 inches of walk-around on both sides and at the foot, plus headboard depth against the wall.
We would recommend 14' x 11' or better. The extra six inches per side is the difference between edging around the bed and moving around it freely, and at this scale that distinction is felt every morning.
Measure before you specify
Get 96 by 84 inches onto the floor in tape before the order is placed. Then do the ordinary things: open a drawer, pull back the covers on the existing bed, walk to the window at night. Problems that never appear on a floor plan appear immediately in tape.
Access, Doorways and Delivery Planning
Delivery is a planned operation at this size. The 96-inch mattress is a single rigid piece that cannot be reduced, and the route from the street to the bedroom has to be established in advance. We survey it, and we tell you honestly if it will not go.
With the divan built in 3 sections, the base will follow almost any route into the house. Plan around the mattress instead. It is one rigid piece, 96 inches at its longest, and it does not compromise.
- The narrowest doorway on the route. Measure the clear opening with the door removed, not the frame.
- Stair width and turns. A 90-degree turn needs diagonal clearance, not merely width. This defeats more oversize deliveries than anything else.
- Ceiling height at the turn. A 96-inch mattress carried on edge needs vertical room to pivot.
- Lift dimensions, in apartment buildings, measure internal depth and door width separately.
- Window access, where the stairs will not take it, a crane or window entry is often the answer. Better known before ordering than after.
Sourcing Linens at 96" x 84"
Plan for custom bedding. At 96" x 84" there is no off-the-shelf option, and a standard duvet will fall short over a mattress of Vispring depth. The specification sheet we provide gives a linen house everything needed to cut correctly first time.
A practical note on covers: 96 inches of mattress wants a duvet between 128 and 140 inches wide. Vispring mattresses are deep, and a cover that fits the surface will not reach the sides.
How a 96" x 84" Reads: Shape, Headboard, Balance
Plan the room around the bed, not the reverse. With eight feet of width and thirty inches of walk-around on each side, the bed alone claims thirteen feet of wall, before nightstands, benches or a dressing area are considered.
The proportion inverts what the eye expects from a bed, and the effect is one of expansiveness, not oddity. Provided the headboard is scaled to the width rather than borrowed from a smaller bed.
A note on the 96" x 84"
At 96 by 84 the bed claims roughly thirteen feet of wall once walk-around clearance is counted. That is longer than most bedroom walls before you have placed a single nightstand. Draw the wall elevation, not just the floor plan. This is the size where the vertical surfaces run out before the floor does.
At 96 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 96 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.
How Vispring Builds This Size
The bed is made by hand from the springs outward. At 96" x 84" a craftsperson nests each calico pocket to the 96 by 84 footprint and ties the honeycomb together by hand. Spring density does not change with size, so the 56 square feet of this bed carries roughly 133 per cent of a King's spring count.
Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet
Natural fillings are teased by hand and laid across the whole surface: wool for temperature regulation, horsetail hair for resilience and airflow, cotton for comfort, with cashmere and silk in the higher collections. Hand-tufting anchors the layers; hand side-stitching squares the border and stops the roll-off common to large machine-made mattresses.

96" x 84": Your Questions Answered
You need 13' x 10' at absolute minimum, about 130 square feet, for 30-inch clearance on three sides. 14' x 11' is the comfortable figure. Tape the footprint on the floor before deciding.
A 96" x 84" offers 56 square feet against 42.2 square feet for a 76" x 80" King, 33 per cent more. It is 20 inches wider and 4 inches longer.
Proportionally, yes. Density is fixed, so a larger footprint simply holds more pockets. At 56 square feet this is roughly 133 per cent of a King's count. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet
Yes. Dual tension builds the spring unit with a different gauge on each side of the centre line, so each sleeper gets their own support without a visible join in the sleeping surface. At 96 inches wide there is ample room for each side to behave independently.
All linens are made to measure at this size. We provide a dimensioned specification sheet with the order. Note the duvet should measure roughly 128 to 140 inches wide to drape correctly.
Yes. Original, Classic and Luxe are all available at this dimension. The collections differ in spring count, filling composition and finish instead of in the sizes they can be built to. Per-collection specification to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule
