The Case for a 76" x 100"
Sleepers at seven feet and above, for whom no production mattress in any market has ever been long enough, and collectors commissioning the maximum expression of the custom programme.
There is a version of this bed available from manufacturers who will make anything to any size. What they cannot do is hand-nest a calico pocket spring honeycomb or side-stitch a border by hand at 76" x 100", and those two operations are the entire difference between a bed that holds its shape for decades and one that does not.
How Big Is a 76" x 100", Really?
At 76" x 100" this bed presents 52.8 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 25 per cent more area, at identical width and 20 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| King Maximum-Long (this size) | 76" × 100" | 52.8 sq ft | +25% |
The King at 76" x 80" is the nearest standard equivalent, which tends to be the size people own when they first enquire about this one. The step between them is not a refinement; it is a different bed.
Will It Fit? Room Dimensions and Clearance
Clearance is what separates a generous bed from a crowded room. For a 76" x 100", plan on 11'4" x 11'4" minimum: 30 inches to walk on either side, 30 at the foot, and six inches of headboard depth. That is approximately 128 square feet committed to the bed alone.
Given the choice, plan 12'4" x 12'4". Large beds punish tight clearance more than small ones do, because the mass of the bed makes a narrow walkway feel narrower than it measures.
Measure before you specify
Before committing, tape 76 by 100 onto the bedroom floor. It converts an abstract measurement into something you can walk around, and walking around it is the only reliable test of whether the room can take it.
Getting a 76" x 100" Into the House
At 100 inches the largest component is genuinely difficult to move through a typical house, and we survey the route before accepting the order. A hand-side-stitched Vispring mattress cannot be bent, folded or compressed. Ninety-degree stair turns are the usual point of failure, followed by lift depth in apartment buildings.
Base construction runs to 2 sections, joined once in position. That flexibility does not extend to the mattress. The spring honeycomb is nested as one piece and the border stitched through by hand, so the mattress is delivered intact or not at all.
- Every doorway from the street to the bedroom, including the front door, which is more often the constraint than people expect.
- Stairwell diagonals; the critical figure at any change of direction, and the usual reason a delivery fails.
- Ceiling and soffit heights; 100 inches of rigid mattress needs somewhere to go when tilted.
- Lift car depth: the door width and the internal depth are different numbers; both matter.
- Contingency access. Window or balcony entry, which we can arrange where the interior route will not serve.
Sheets, Duvets and Made-to-Measure Linen
No mass-market bedding is cut to 76" x 100". Fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are made to order, and a duvet sized for the nearest standard bed will sit short once mattress depth is accounted for. We supply a written linen specification with every bespoke order so any competent linen house can cut to your exact dimensions.
Duvet proportion matters more at this width than most people expect. For 76 inches of mattress, specify 108 to 120 inches of duvet: the overhang is what makes a large bed look dressed instead of merely covered.
How a 76" x 100" Reads: Shape, Headboard, Balance
At 100 inches the length exceeds the width by two feet, and the bed will dominate the axis of the room. A low headboard and deliberate symmetry at the sides are essential; a tall headboard at this length produces a corridor. Confirm the delivery route before anything else; a 100-inch component will not negotiate most 90-degree stair turns.
The length dominates, and the room has to answer it. Keep the headboard low, skip the footboard, and place substantial furniture at the sides to stop the space reading as a passage.
A note on the 76" x 100"
This is the ceiling of the range, and it is worth being explicit about what that means. There is no larger length available from Vispring at any price, in any collection, on any timescale. Clients occasionally ask what comes after the 100-inch length; the honest answer is that nothing does.
Hand-Building to 76" x 100"
The spring unit is where the money goes and where the difference lives. Built by hand to 76 by 100, every pocket sewn in calico and tied to its neighbours, it produces a surface that responds independently at every point across 52.8 square feet, approximately 125 per cent of the pocket count of a standard King.
Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet
The fillings are where the collections diverge, but the method does not: everything is teased by hand and laid across the full 52.8 square feet, then tufted through by hand. The border is finished with hand side-stitching, which on a mattress of this footprint is the difference between a usable edge and a decorative one.

Before You Order: Common Questions
No. The tension change happens within a single continuous spring honeycomb, not between two mattresses pushed together, so the sleeping surface stays unbroken across all 76 inches.
The mattress measures 100 inches on its longest side and cannot be flexed. Vispring borders are hand side-stitched, which makes the mattress rigid by design. At this size we survey the delivery route before confirming the order, because a 90-degree stair turn will usually defeat it. The divan base is built in 2 sections, so the base itself is rarely the constraint.
Entirely. There is no 76" x 100" sitting in a warehouse anywhere; the spring unit is nested to your dimensions from scratch. Build time to be confirmed, Vispring made-to-order schedule Your specialist confirms the schedule at sign-off.
It does not. The built-to-order programme runs across the Original, Classic and Luxe ranges, so dimension and collection are independent decisions. Per-collection detail to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule
Thirty inches on each side and at the foot is the minimum, which puts the room at 11'4" x 11'4" or about 128 square feet. Thirty-six inches, 12'4" x 12'4"; is materially more comfortable to live with.
All linens are made to measure at this size. We provide a dimensioned specification sheet with the order. Note the duvet should measure roughly 108 to 120 inches wide to drape correctly.
