Why Clients Specify 92" x 92"
Buyers who want the Alberta King presence but are constrained by a wall, a doorway, or a delivery route that will not take 96 inches.
The commission itself is unremarkable to Vispring, which is rather the point. Because every bed leaves Plymouth hand-built to order, a 92" x 92" runs through the same benches, the same hands and the same quality gates as any catalogue size. The dimensions differ; nothing else does.
Putting 58.8 Square Feet in Perspective
At 92" x 92" this bed presents 58.8 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 39 per cent more area, 16 inches wider and 12 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| Grand Square 92 (this size) | 92" × 92" | 58.8 sq ft | +39% |
The nearest production size is the King at 76" x 80". This specification exceeds it, and the gap is precisely why the bed has to be commissioned. There is no manufactured mattress that closes it, at any price.
Space, Clearance and Living With It
Clearance is what separates a generous bed from a crowded room. For a 92" x 92", plan on 12'8" x 10'8" minimum: 30 inches to walk on either side, 30 at the foot, and six inches of headboard depth. That is approximately 135 square feet committed to the bed alone.
We would recommend 13'8" x 11'8" or better. The extra six inches per side is the difference between edging around the bed and moving around it freely, and at this scale that distinction is felt every morning.
Measure before you specify
Tape the 92 by 92 footprint onto the floor before you sign anything. Then move a chair, make the existing bed, and open every door in the room. If any of that becomes awkward, adjust the specification rather than the expectation.
The Delivery Question
The largest component measures 92 inches, past the point where access can be assumed. Vispring mattresses are hand-side-stitched and do not flex, the mattress must physically pass through every opening on the route. Measure the narrowest doorway, the stair width, and above all the diagonal clearance at any 90-degree turn.
With the divan built in 2 sections, the base will follow almost any route into the house. Plan around the mattress instead. It is one rigid piece, 92 inches at its longest, and it does not compromise.
- Clear door openings. Take doors off their hinges before measuring; the frame is not the opening.
- The turn at the half-landing. Measure corner to corner diagonally. This single measurement decides most oversize deliveries.
- Overhead clearance, light fittings, sloped ceilings and beams all reduce the room available to pivot 92 inches.
- Handrails and newel posts. Both narrow a staircase considerably and both are frequently forgotten.
- The alternative route: balcony, French doors, or a crane lift. Worth identifying in advance even if unused.
Sheets, Duvets and Made-to-Measure Linen
Expect to have linens cut. 92" x 92" is outside every standard bedding range, so fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are all made to measure. We issue a dimensioned linen specification with the order to remove the guesswork.
Duvet proportion matters more at this width than most people expect. For 92 inches of mattress, specify 124 to 136 inches of duvet: the overhang is what makes a large bed look dressed instead of merely covered.
Proportion and Presence in the Room
This size exists largely to solve access problems. If a 96-inch square has been ruled out by a stairwell or a lift, 92 inches frequently succeeds where 96 fails, and the difference is imperceptible once the bed is in the room.
Square beds behave differently in a room. Without a dominant direction they sit as a deliberate object instead of a piece of furniture pointed at a wall, and they reward strict symmetry: paired lamps, paired tables, art centred over the headboard.
A note on the 92" x 92"
This size is almost entirely an access solution. It looks identical to a 96-inch square once installed, and it fits stairwells and lifts that a 96 will not. If a survey has ruled out the Alberta King, ask about this before assuming a square is impossible.
At 92 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 92 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.
Hand-Building to 92" x 92"
The bed is made by hand from the springs outward. At 92" x 92" a craftsperson nests each calico pocket to the 92 by 92 footprint and ties the honeycomb together by hand. Spring density does not change with size, so the 58.8 square feet of this bed carries roughly 139 per cent of a King's spring count.

Above the springs the bed is built from wool, hair and cotton instead of foam: each teased apart by hand so the fibres stay lofted, laid across 58.8 square feet, and tufted through by hand to hold position. The hand-side-stitched border that finishes it is what keeps the edge square for decades.

Yes. Dual tension builds the spring unit with a different gauge on each side of the centre line, so each sleeper gets their own support without a visible join in the sleeping surface. At 92 inches wide there is ample room for each side to behave independently.

A custom dimension carries a premium over the equivalent catalogue size, reflecting the hand-nesting of a spring unit built to your measurements and the additional natural fillings a larger surface requires.
