Vispring made-to-order bed in a Denver bedroom setting

80" x 90" Custom Mattress & Beds by Vispring

Wide King Grand-Long · 203 x 229 cm

Eighty inches wide by seven and a half feet long, generous in both dimensions without approaching the square proportions of the Grand collection. It occupies a well-judged middle ground for buyers who want substantially more bed without the room-dominating presence of a 96-inch square.

Why Clients Specify 80" x 90"

Tall couples, and families whose children migrate into the bed overnight and have made the current King untenable.

There is a particular frustration in owning an excellent bed that is the wrong shape, and it is not solved by spending more on the same dimensions. The 80" x 90" exists because the problem is geometric, not qualitative. No amount of craftsmanship in a 76-inch width helps a sleeper who needs 80 inches.

Standard widths carried to built-to-order lengths, for sleepers who have spent their lives with their feet over the end of the bed.

Putting 50 Square Feet in Perspective

At 80" x 90" this bed presents 50 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 18 per cent more area, 4 inches wider and 10 inches longer.

Twin 38" × 75" 19.8 sq ft -53%
Twin XL 38" × 80" 21.1 sq ft -50%
Full 54" × 75" 28.1 sq ft -33%
Queen 60" × 80" 33.3 sq ft -21%

Wide King Grand-Long (this size) 80" × 90" 50 sq ft +18%

The King at 76" x 80" sits closest among production sizes. It is worth measuring one in a showroom before ordering: the delta between it and 80" x 90" is easier to feel than to read on a page.

Fitting an 80" x 90" Into a Bedroom

A bed at this scale is a room-planning decision before it is a purchase. The working minimum for an 80" x 90" is 11'8" x 10'6", around 123 square feet, allowing 30 inches of walk-around on both sides and at the foot, plus headboard depth against the wall.

We would recommend 12'8" x 11'6" or better. The extra six inches per side is the difference between edging around the bed and moving around it freely, and at this scale that distinction is felt every morning.

Measure before you specify

Mark the 80-inch by 90-inch footprint on the bedroom floor with painter's tape before committing. Live with the outline for a few days. Almost every client who does this adjusts their specification, usually up in width and down in length, which is the correction most people need and few anticipate.

Delivery, Access & the Staircase Problem

Access needs checking at this size. The 90-inch dimension is fixed and unbendable, and while most homes manage it, enough do not that we would rather establish it now. Measure doorways with the door removed, and measure diagonals at every turn.

The base arrives in 2 sections and is assembled in the room. The mattress cannot be treated the same way; Vispring's construction method produces one continuous sprung unit, which is precisely why the bed lasts and precisely why delivery needs planning.

Bedding for a Non-Standard Size

Linens will be commissioned instead of bought. Nothing is manufactured to 80" x 90" at scale, so fitted sheets and protectors are made to measure. Every order includes a specification sheet with the exact dimensions, which most clients hand straight to a linen supplier.

For the duvet, work from 112 to 124 inches across and not the 80-inch mattress measurement. The extra width is what falls over the sides, and on a bed this size that fall is most of the visual effect.

Proportion, Headboards & How the Bed Reads

Both dimensions exceed standard stock here, which means bedding, headboard and base are all made to order. The advantage is that everything is then specified as a coherent set instead of assembled from parts.

The shape is conventional and the size is not, which is a useful combination: the bed feels normal to live with while being substantially larger than anything standard.

A note on the 80" x 90"

This dimension sits at an awkward point for bedding: too wide for King linens, not a recognised oversize format. Unlike the Wyoming King a few inches away, nothing is stocked at 80 by 90. Budget for made-to-measure sheets from the outset, not discovering the gap after the bed arrives.

At 80 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 80 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.

The Craft Behind an 80" x 90"

A built-to-order size is not a variation on a standard product. It is the standard process applied to your numbers. For an 80" x 90" that means a craftsperson pocketing each spring in calico and tying the honeycomb by hand to a 80 by 90 footprint. Density is fixed, so the count lands near 118 per cent of a King's.

Natural fillings are laid, not moulded. Fleece wool regulates temperature, horsetail hair provides resilience and airflow, cotton adds comfort, all hand-teased across the full surface and anchored by hand-tufting. Then the border is side-stitched by hand, which is why a Vispring edge stays vertical.

Before You Order: Common Questions

The mattress measures 90 inches on its longest side and cannot be flexed. Vispring borders are hand side-stitched, which makes the mattress rigid by design. Measure the narrowest doorway and the diagonal clearance at every turn before ordering. The divan base is built in 2 sections, so the base itself is rarely the constraint.

It is, and at 80 inches wide it works particularly well: each half is wide enough that neither sleeper encounters the transition. Specify it in the configurator above and we will quote both tensions.

The working minimum is 11'8" x 10'6", roughly 123 square feet, allowing 30 inches of walk-around on both sides and at the foot plus headboard depth. We recommend 12'8" x 11'6" or larger.

The divan is built in 2 sections and pushed together in position; the join sits beneath the mattress and is not felt through it. The mattress itself is a single continuous unit.

The bespoke programme covers the Original, Classic and Luxe ranges at this size. What changes between them is the spring count, the filling composition and the finish. Per-collection detail to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule

All linens are made to measure at this size. We provide a dimensioned specification sheet with the order. Note the duvet should measure roughly 112 to 124 inches wide to drape correctly.
