The Case for an 80" x 84"
Couples who find a King marginally tight in both directions and would rather solve the problem once than choose between them.
The economics are worth stating plainly. A bespoke dimension costs more than the equivalent catalogue size because the spring unit is nested to order and the fillings are teased across a larger surface. It does not cost dramatically more, because hand-building to order is what Vispring already does for every bed it makes.
What 80" x 84" Actually Means
At 80" x 84" this bed presents 46.7 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 11 per cent more area, 4 inches wider and 4 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| Wide King Extra-Long (this size) | 80" × 84" | 46.7 sq ft | +11% |
The closest production size, the King at 76" x 80", is where most buyers start. 46.7 square feet is where they finish, and the distance between those two figures is the whole argument for building to order.
Fitting an 80" x 84" Into a Bedroom
The floor plan decides this more than taste does. At 80" x 84" the bed requires a room of at least 11'8" x 10', about 117 square feet, before it stops feeling like furniture that was delivered to the wrong address.
Given the choice, plan 12'8" x 11'. Large beds punish tight clearance more than small ones do, because the mass of the bed makes a narrow walkway feel narrower than it measures.
Measure before you specify
Tape the 80 by 84 footprint onto the floor before you sign anything. Then move a chair, make the existing bed, and open every door in the room. If any of that becomes awkward, adjust the specification rather than the expectation.
Delivery, Access & the Staircase Problem
At 84 inches this is where delivery stops being routine. A Vispring mattress cannot be bent or compressed to get it round a corner; the border stitching that makes it durable also makes it rigid. Check every doorway and every turn before ordering.
2 sections of divan base means the base is the easy part. The mattress is not divisible: hand-nested springs, hand-teased fillings and a hand-stitched border make a single structural object, and it must fit as one.
- Front door and hallway. The entry point defeats more deliveries than the staircase does.
- Turning circles. Measure the diagonal at every corner; a 84-inch panel needs the space to swing.
- Vertical clearance. Low ceilings and pendant lights restrict how far the mattress can be tilted.
- Bedroom door approach. A door at the end of a narrow corridor is a harder problem than a wide one.
- Plan B; crane or window access, which is routine at this scale and worth pricing early.
Bedding for a Non-Standard Size
Plan for custom bedding. At 80" x 84" there is no off-the-shelf option, and a standard duvet will fall short over a mattress of Vispring depth. The specification sheet we provide gives a linen house everything needed to cut correctly first time.
Size the duvet generously. Over 80 inches of mattress you want 112 to 124 inches of cover to get a genuine fall down each side. Anything cut flush to the mattress reads as undersized the moment the bed is made.
How an 80" x 84" Reads: Shape, Headboard, Balance
At 80 inches wide the bed exceeds standard headboard stock, so the headboard becomes a made-to-order item alongside the mattress. Plan for it in the budget from the outset, not discovering it at the end.
Proportionally this behaves like a normal bed, simply more of one. Standard room-planning instincts hold: headboard against the long wall, nightstands flanking, circulation down both sides and across the foot.
A note on the 80" x 84"
The quiet problem with 80 inches of width is the headboard. Four inches past a King sounds trivial, but it moves you outside every stock headboard on the market, and clients who budget only for the mattress are routinely surprised. Specify the headboard at the same time: it is cheaper as part of one commission.
At 80 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 80 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.
The Craft Behind an 80" x 84"
The distinction between hand-nested and machine-assembled matters most at large sizes. An 80" x 84" spring unit is tied together by hand across its full 46.7 square feet, which keeps tension consistent to the very edge, where oversized machine-built mattresses characteristically fail. Spring count scales with area to about 111 per cent of a King's.

After the springs, layers of British fleece wool, horsetail hair and cotton are hand-teased and distributed across 46.7 square feet, then locked in with hand-tufting. Finally the border is side-stitched by hand: an operation that takes hours and pays for itself over decades by keeping the mattress edge square.

Not at this width. It is built in 2 sections by design, which is what makes it possible to get the bed into the room at all. The mattress is the indivisible component.
The limiting piece is the mattress, which is 84 inches at its longest and completely rigid. Measure the narrowest doorway and the diagonal clearance at every turn before ordering. The base is far easier, it ships in 2 sections and assembles in the room.
It does not. The built-to-order programme runs across the Original, Classic and Luxe ranges, so dimension and collection are independent decisions. Per-collection detail to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule
It is, and at 80 inches wide it works particularly well: each half is wide enough that neither sleeper encounters the transition. Specify it in the configurator above and we will quote both tensions.
Proportionally, yes. Density is fixed, so a larger footprint simply holds more pockets. At 46.7 square feet this is roughly 111 per cent of a King's count. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet
Thirty inches on each side and at the foot is the minimum, which puts the room at 11'8" x 10' or about 117 square feet. Thirty-six inches, 12'8" x 11'; is materially more comfortable to live with.
