Why Clients Specify 76" x 96"
Sleepers approaching seven feet, and buyers commissioning a primary suite bed where the room has been designed around the bed instead of the reverse.
The economics are worth stating plainly. A bespoke dimension costs more than the equivalent catalogue size because the spring unit is nested to order and the fillings are teased across a larger surface. It does not cost dramatically more, because hand-building to order is what Vispring already does for every bed it makes.
76" x 96" Against the Standard Sizes
At 76" x 96" this bed presents 50.7 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 20 per cent more area, at identical width and 16 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| King Supreme-Long (this size) | 76" × 96" | 50.7 sq ft | +20% |
Among standard formats the King at 76" x 80" comes nearest. Most clients who specify 76" x 96" have already ruled it out, usually on the basis of a single dimension that could not be fixed by buying a better version of the same shape.
Planning the Room
Before the specification is finalised, measure the room. A 76" x 96" occupies its space uncompromisingly, and the minimum viable footprint including circulation is 11'4" x 11', or roughly 125 square feet.
12'4" x 12' is the more comfortable target. Thirty-six inches of clearance instead of thirty changes how the room is used daily: making the bed, opening a wardrobe, walking past in the dark.
Measure before you specify
The tape test costs nothing and changes specifications regularly. Mark out 76 by 96, leave it a week, and pay attention to where you find yourself stepping around it. That is where the clearance is short.
Why Access Is Settled Before the Order
Delivery is a planned operation at this size. The 96-inch mattress is a single rigid piece that cannot be reduced, and the route from the street to the bedroom has to be established in advance. We survey it, and we tell you honestly if it will not go.
The base arrives in 2 sections and is assembled in the room. The mattress cannot be treated the same way; Vispring's construction method produces one continuous sprung unit, which is precisely why the bed lasts and precisely why delivery needs planning.
- Every doorway from the street to the bedroom, including the front door, which is more often the constraint than people expect.
- Stairwell diagonals; the critical figure at any change of direction, and the usual reason a delivery fails.
- Ceiling and soffit heights; 96 inches of rigid mattress needs somewhere to go when tilted.
- Lift car depth: the door width and the internal depth are different numbers; both matter.
- Contingency access. Window or balcony entry, which we can arrange where the interior route will not serve.
Dressing a 76" x 96"
No mass-market bedding is cut to 76" x 96". Fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are made to order, and a duvet sized for the nearest standard bed will sit short once mattress depth is accounted for. We supply a written linen specification with every bespoke order so any competent linen house can cut to your exact dimensions.
Size the duvet generously. Over 76 inches of mattress you want 108 to 120 inches of cover to get a genuine fall down each side. Anything cut flush to the mattress reads as undersized the moment the bed is made.
Headboards, Symmetry and Visual Weight
A 96-inch mattress on a 76-inch width reads as distinctly rectangular. Balance it with a wide headboard that extends past the mattress edge; a headboard cut to the mattress width alone will look undersized against this length.
The elongation is the defining characteristic. A bed noticeably longer than it is wide draws the eye down its length, so the room needs counterweight at the sides: a bench, a pair of chairs, generous bedside furniture.
A note on the 76" x 96"
At 96 inches the mattress is exactly eight feet long, which happens to be the standard height of a domestic ceiling. That coincidence is useful: if you cannot stand the mattress upright in the room, the delivery crew cannot manoeuvre it there either. It is the quickest feasibility test available.
Hand-Building to 76" x 96"
The spring unit is where the money goes and where the difference lives. Built by hand to 76 by 96, every pocket sewn in calico and tied to its neighbours, it produces a surface that responds independently at every point across 50.7 square feet, approximately 120 per cent of the pocket count of a standard King.

After the springs, layers of British fleece wool, horsetail hair and cotton are hand-teased and distributed across 50.7 square feet, then locked in with hand-tufting. Finally the border is side-stitched by hand: an operation that takes hours and pays for itself over decades by keeping the mattress edge square.

It is, and at 76 inches wide it works particularly well: each half is wide enough that neither sleeper encounters the transition. Specify it in the configurator above and we will quote both tensions.
In surface area it is 20 per cent more than a King: 50.7 square feet against 42.2. Dimensionally it is the same width and 16 inches longer.

Thirty inches on each side and at the foot is the minimum, which puts the room at 11'4" x 11' or about 125 square feet. Thirty-six inches, 12'4" x 12'; is materially more comfortable to live with.
