The commission itself is unremarkable to Vispring, which is rather the point. Because every bed leaves Plymouth hand-built to order, an 84" x 80" runs through the same benches, the same hands and the same quality gates as any catalogue size. The dimensions differ; nothing else does.

Size, Surface and Comparison

At 84" x 80" this bed presents 46.7 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 11 per cent more area, 8 inches wider and identical length.

The nearest production size is the King at 76" x 80". This specification exceeds it, and the gap is precisely why the bed has to be commissioned. There is no manufactured mattress that closes it, at any price.

Space, Clearance and Living With It

The floor plan decides this more than taste does. At 84" x 80" the bed requires a room of at least 12' x 9'8", about 116 square feet, before it stops feeling like furniture that was delivered to the wrong address.

Given the choice, plan 13' x 10'8". Large beds punish tight clearance more than small ones do, because the mass of the bed makes a narrow walkway feel narrower than it measures.

Doorways, Stairs and Lifts

Access needs checking at this size. The 84-inch dimension is fixed and unbendable, and while most homes manage it, enough do not that we would rather establish it now. Measure doorways with the door removed, and measure diagonals at every turn.

2 sections of divan base means the base is the easy part. The mattress is not divisible: hand-nested springs, hand-teased fillings and a hand-stitched border make a single structural object, and it must fit as one.

• Clear door openings. Take doors off their hinges before measuring; the frame is not the opening.
• The turn at the half-landing. Measure corner to corner diagonally. This single measurement decides most oversize deliveries.
• Overhead clearance, light fittings, sloped ceilings and beams all reduce the room available to pivot 84 inches.
• Handrails and newel posts. Both narrow a staircase considerably and both are frequently forgotten.
• The alternative route: balcony, French doors, or a crane lift. Worth identifying in advance even if unused.

The Linen Question

Plan for custom bedding. At 84" x 80" there is no off-the-shelf option, and a standard duvet will fall short over a mattress of Vispring depth. The specification sheet we provide gives a linen house everything needed to cut correctly first time.

One point specific to this width: at 84 inches, a duvet that drapes correctly should measure roughly 116 to 128 inches across, allowing a proper fall on both sides over a mattress of Vispring depth. A cover cut to the mattress width alone sits on the bed, not over it, and the difference is immediately visible.

Designing Around the Proportion

At seven feet wide, the bed needs a wall that can carry it. A 10-foot wall will look crowded; 12 feet or more allows the bed to sit as a centrepiece with breathing room at either side.

The proportion inverts what the eye expects from a bed, and the effect is one of expansiveness, not oddity. Provided the headboard is scaled to the width rather than borrowed from a smaller bed.

At 84 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress.
