The 60" x 84" in Practice
Tall single sleepers in rooms that cannot absorb additional width, and couples who have prioritised floor space over mattress width but need the extra length for one partner.
Vispring has built to custom dimension since 1901, and the reasoning has never changed: standard sizes were drawn around manufacturing convenience, not around people. A 60" x 84" is not a King that has been stretched. It is a bed specified from the first pocket spring to your measurements, with the spring unit hand-nested to that exact footprint.
60" x 84" Against the Standard Sizes
At 60" x 84" this bed presents 35 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 17 per cent less area, 16 inches narrower and 4 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| Queen Extra-Long (this size) | 60" × 84" | 35 sq ft | -17% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |

Fitting a 60" x 84" Into a Bedroom
Start with the room, not the bed. A 60" x 84" needs 10' x 10' as an absolute floor, roughly 100 square feet, which buys you 30 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot and six inches for the headboard.
If the room allows 11' x 11', take it. The additional clearance is disproportionately valuable at large sizes, because the walk-around is where a big bed either works or becomes an obstacle.
Measure before you specify
Outline the 60-inch by 84-inch footprint on the floor and live with it. Clients who skip this step are the ones who call afterwards about the walkway at the foot of the bed; clients who do it tend to adjust the specification and be glad they did.
The Delivery Question
The largest component measures 84 inches, past the point where access can be assumed. Vispring mattresses are hand-side-stitched and do not flex, the mattress must physically pass through every opening on the route. Measure the narrowest doorway, the stair width, and above all the diagonal clearance at any 90-degree turn.
With the divan built in 1 section, the base will follow almost any route into the house. Plan around the mattress instead. It is one rigid piece, 84 inches at its longest, and it does not compromise.
- Clear door openings. Take doors off their hinges before measuring; the frame is not the opening.
- The turn at the half-landing. Measure corner to corner diagonally. This single measurement decides most oversize deliveries.
- Overhead clearance, light fittings, sloped ceilings and beams all reduce the room available to pivot 84 inches.
- Handrails and newel posts. Both narrow a staircase considerably and both are frequently forgotten.
- The alternative route: balcony, French doors, or a crane lift. Worth identifying in advance even if unused.
Sourcing Linens at 60" x 84"
Linens will be commissioned instead of bought. Nothing is manufactured to 60" x 84" at scale, so fitted sheets and protectors are made to measure. Every order includes a specification sheet with the exact dimensions, which most clients hand straight to a linen supplier.
Duvet proportion matters more at this width than most people expect. For 60 inches of mattress, specify 92 to 104 inches of duvet: the overhang is what makes a large bed look dressed instead of merely covered.
Proportion, Headboards & How the Bed Reads
At 60 inches wide the bed still reads as a Queen from the doorway, which means standard nightstands, standard headboard proportions and standard traffic flow all survive intact. The change is felt instead of seen.
The length dominates, and the room has to answer it. Keep the headboard low, skip the footboard, and place substantial furniture at the sides to stop the space reading as a passage.
A note on the 60" x 84"
Worth knowing: at 60 inches wide this is the only extra-long size that still fits a standard Queen bed frame footprint in most rooms. Clients frequently keep their existing nightstands, rugs and headboard wall arrangement entirely unchanged; the only thing that moves is the foot of the bed, four inches further out.
Construction: Springs, Fillings and Stitching
What arrives is a single hand-tied honeycomb of calico-pocketed springs, made to 60" x 84" and to nothing else. Because Vispring never varies spring density, the count scales directly with area: about 83 per cent of what a like-for-like King carries.
Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet
The fillings are where the collections diverge, but the method does not: everything is teased by hand and laid across the full 35 square feet, then tufted through by hand. The border is finished with hand side-stitching, which on a mattress of this footprint is the difference between a usable edge and a decorative one.

The divan is built in 1 section and pushed together in position; the join sits beneath the mattress and is not felt through it. The mattress itself is a single continuous unit.

Thirty inches on each side and at the foot is the minimum, which puts the room at 10' x 10' or about 100 square feet. Thirty-six inches, 11' x 11'; is materially more comfortable to live with.

Yes; dual tension is specified at the point of order and the spring unit is built with a different gauge either side of the centre line. At 60 inches wide each side is generous enough that neither sleeper meets the transition.
