The 78" x 80" in Practice
Couples who want a small, considered increase, not a dramatic one, and buyers matching an existing bedstead or headboard of unusual dimension.
Vispring has built to custom dimension since 1901, and the reasoning has never changed: standard sizes were drawn around manufacturing convenience, not around people. A 78" x 80" is not a King that has been stretched. It is a bed specified from the first pocket spring to your measurements, with the spring unit hand-nested to that exact footprint.
Putting 43.3 Square Feet in Perspective
At 78" x 80" this bed presents 43.3 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 3 per cent more area, 2 inches wider and identical length.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| Olympic Queen Plus (this size) | 78" × 80" | 43.3 sq ft | +3% |
The King at 76" x 80" sits closest among production sizes. It is worth measuring one in a showroom before ordering: the delta between it and 78" x 80" is easier to feel than to read on a page.
Will It Fit? Room Dimensions and Clearance
Clearance is what separates a generous bed from a crowded room. For a 78" x 80", plan on 11'6" x 9'8" minimum: 30 inches to walk on either side, 30 at the foot, and six inches of headboard depth. That is approximately 111 square feet committed to the bed alone.
12'6" x 10'8" is the figure we would put on a plan. It allows 36 inches of circulation, which is the difference between a bedroom containing a large bed and a bedroom built around one.
Measure before you specify
Tape the 78 by 80 footprint onto the floor before you sign anything. Then move a chair, make the existing bed, and open every door in the room. If any of that becomes awkward, adjust the specification rather than the expectation.
Getting a 78" x 80" Into the House
At 80 inches the largest single component sits within the range most homes take without difficulty. A standard 36-inch doorway and a straight staircase will normally accommodate it, though a tight landing or a return stair still deserves a tape measure before the order is placed.
Base construction runs to 2 sections, joined once in position. That flexibility does not extend to the mattress. The spring honeycomb is nested as one piece and the border stitched through by hand, so the mattress is delivered intact or not at all.
- Front door and hallway. The entry point defeats more deliveries than the staircase does.
- Turning circles. Measure the diagonal at every corner; a 80-inch panel needs the space to swing.
- Vertical clearance. Low ceilings and pendant lights restrict how far the mattress can be tilted.
- Bedroom door approach. A door at the end of a narrow corridor is a harder problem than a wide one.
- Plan B; crane or window access, which is routine at this scale and worth pricing early.
Bedding for a Non-Standard Size
No mass-market bedding is cut to 78" x 80". Fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are made to order, and a duvet sized for the nearest standard bed will sit short once mattress depth is accounted for. We supply a written linen specification with every bespoke order so any competent linen house can cut to your exact dimensions.
For the duvet, work from 110 to 122 inches across and not the 78-inch mattress measurement. The extra width is what falls over the sides, and on a bed this size that fall is most of the visual effect.
Proportion, Headboards & How the Bed Reads
Two inches is imperceptible in the room and meaningful in the bed. Most King bedding will still function acceptably here, though a made-to-order fitted sheet will sit considerably better.
A square footprint reads as a decision and not a default. It needs symmetry to work, but given symmetry, it is the most composed proportion a bedroom can have.
A note on the 78" x 80"
This is the smallest step the bespoke programme offers, and it exists for precision rather than ambition. Two inches wider than a King solves a specific complaint without any of the consequences; the room is unchanged, most King bedding still works, and the headboard question barely arises.
At 78 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 78 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.
Hand-Building to 78" x 80"
Every 78" x 80" begins as an empty frame and a pile of calico pockets. The spring unit is nested by hand to your dimensions rather than cut from a larger stock unit, which is why the perimeter of the bed supports weight as reliably as the centre. At 103 per cent of a King's area, it carries approximately 103 per cent of the springs.
Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet
The fillings are where the collections diverge, but the method does not: everything is teased by hand and laid across the full 43.3 square feet, then tufted through by hand. The border is finished with hand side-stitching, which on a mattress of this footprint is the difference between a usable edge and a decorative one.

Practical Questions
Use the configurator on this page, or call the showroom. Price turns on collection, tension, base and headboard as much as on dimension. Price band to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule Quotes are written and carry no obligation.
It is, and at 78 inches wide it works particularly well: each half is wide enough that neither sleeper encounters the transition. Specify it in the configurator above and we will quote both tensions.
Thirty inches on each side and at the foot is the minimum, which puts the room at 11'6" x 9'8" or about 111 square feet. Thirty-six inches, 12'6" x 10'8"; is materially more comfortable to live with.
Not at this width. It is built in 2 sections by design, which is what makes it possible to get the bed into the room at all. The mattress is the indivisible component.
Nothing is held in stock at this dimension: the bed is begun when you order it and built by hand in Plymouth. Current lead time to be confirmed, Vispring bespoke schedule We give you a firm date once the specification is agreed.
All linens are made to measure at this size. We provide a dimensioned specification sheet with the order. Note the duvet should measure roughly 110 to 122 inches wide to drape correctly.
