Vispring made-to-order bed in a Denver bedroom setting

76" x 90" Custom Mattress & Beds by Vispring

King Grand-Long · 193 x 229 cm

Ten inches beyond a standard King, at full King width. The proportion remains handsome, noticeably long, but not yet extreme, and the additional length is enough to accommodate a sleeper who has never once fit a production mattress.

The 76" x 90" in Practice

Sleepers between 6'6" and 6'9", and couples who sleep with a dog across the foot of the bed and want that space returned to them.

The made-to-measure route is not exotic and it is not a favour. Vispring's factory has no production line to interrupt: every bed is built by hand at a bench, so a 76" x 90" is simply a different set of measurements handed to the same craftsperson who would otherwise be building a Queen.

Standard widths carried to built-to-order lengths, for sleepers who have spent their lives with their feet over the end of the bed.

How Big Is a 76" x 90", Really?

At 76" x 90" this bed presents 47.5 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 13 per cent more area, at identical width and 10 inches longer.

Twin 38" × 75" 19.8 sq ft -53%
Twin XL 38" × 80" 21.1 sq ft -50%
Full 54" × 75" 28.1 sq ft -33%
Queen 60" × 80" 33.3 sq ft -21%
California King 72" × 84" 42 sq ft -1%

The King at 76" x 80" sits closest among production sizes. It is worth measuring one in a showroom before ordering: the delta between it and 76" x 90" is easier to feel than to read on a page.

Room Size, Clearance and Circulation

Room dimensions govern this choice. A 76" x 90" needs 11'4" x 10'6" at minimum, 119 square feet or so, which accounts for 30-inch walkways on three sides and the depth the headboard takes from the wall.

Given the choice, plan 12'4" x 11'6". Large beds punish tight clearance more than small ones do, because the mass of the bed makes a narrow walkway feel narrower than it measures.

Measure before you specify

Before committing, tape 76 by 90 onto the bedroom floor. It converts an abstract measurement into something you can walk around, and walking around it is the only reliable test of whether the room can take it.

Why Access Is Settled Before the Order

90 inches is the threshold at which we start asking questions about the house instead of the room. The mattress arrives as one rigid piece. Doorways are usually fine; the turn at the top of a staircase is where these deliveries fail.

With the divan built in 2 sections, the base will follow almost any route into the house. Plan around the mattress instead. It is one rigid piece, 90 inches at its longest, and it does not compromise.

Bedding for a Non-Standard Size

Expect to have linens cut. 76" x 90" is outside every standard bedding range, so fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are all made to measure. We issue a dimensioned linen specification with the order to remove the guesswork.

One point specific to this width: at 76 inches, a duvet that drapes correctly should measure roughly 108 to 120 inches across, allowing a proper fall on both sides over a mattress of Vispring depth. A cover cut to the mattress width alone sits on the bed, not over it, and the difference is immediately visible.

The Look of a 76" x 90"

At 90 inches the foot of the bed will sit noticeably further into the room than a King. Measure the resulting walkway before committing: many rooms that comfortably hold a King become congested at this length.

Proportionally this behaves like a normal bed, simply more of one. Standard room-planning instincts hold: headboard against the long wall, nightstands flanking, circulation down both sides and across the foot.

A note on the 76" x 90"

A detail people miss at 90 inches: the bed extends far enough into the room that a bench or blanket box at the foot usually has to go. Measure from the headboard wall to the nearest obstruction: a radiator, a bay window, a doorway swing, before assuming the length is free.

The Craft Behind a 76" x 90"

A built-to-order size is not a variation on a standard product. It is the standard process applied to your numbers. For a 76" x 90" that means a craftsperson pocketing each spring in calico and tying the honeycomb by hand to a 76 by 90 footprint. Density is fixed, so the count lands near 113 per cent of a King's.

Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet

The layering is done by hand and it is slow, which is the point: hand-teased fibres interlock instead of compressing into a mat. Across 47.5 square feet that means the bed feels the same in year twenty as in year one. The hand-stitched border keeps the perimeter as usable as the middle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at this width. It is built in 2 sections by design, which is what makes it possible to get the bed into the room at all. The mattress is the indivisible component.

In surface area it is 13 per cent more than a King: 47.5 square feet against 42.2. Dimensionally it is the same width and 10 inches longer.

Yes. Dual tension builds the spring unit with a different gauge on each side of the centre line, so each sleeper gets their own support without a visible join in the sleeping surface. At 76 inches wide there is ample room for each side to behave independently.

Work from roughly 108 to 120 inches of width, not the 76-inch mattress figure; the overhang is what falls down the sides over a mattress of Vispring depth.
